The nation is making a $1.15 billion investment in research on the so-called “long hauler” syndrome associated with COVID-19, searching for clues as to what triggers its debilitating symptoms and how to treat them, Dr. Anthony Fauci told a virtual Central Florida audience Wednesday. “It’s profound fatigue, muscle aches, temperature dysregulation, sleep disorder, fast heartbeat … and a thing called brain fog, which means they have a real difficulty in focusing or concentrating,” said Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, noting that as many as one-fourth of all COVID survivors develop the syndrome.
